Ashford Book Quarter Final Spot

Ashford came out winners in a hard-fought battle against Abbey Rangers in Addlestone Moore to book themselves a place in the Quarter Finals of the Capital Cup.

Ashford were buoyed with the return of Jess Boyd and Claire Richardson who had been sidelined through injury.

It was a timely return for the two with news of Laura Huse and Tia Prior both unavailable.

The away side started the brighter of the two sides with Ashley Cheatley being denied early on and Lavana Neufville seeing her strike on goal also denied by the goalkeeper.

Abbey Rangers were proving a tough side to break down, with glimpses of great football being played predominantly in the middle third however being denied by the sheer strength and experience of Rebecca Thurlow and Charlotte McGregor at the back.

The deadlock was broken in the fifteenth minute when Richardson, arriving from the back post stuck from a Vicky James corner.

It was a much needed goal which allowed the players to settle and begin playing the brand of football that has them win every game so far this season.

Neufville showed her quality again before the break, after Lucy Easton put in a cross into the box and Neufivlle arrived at the back post striking on the half volley which hit the cross bar but her follow up header ended up in the back of the net.

HT: 0-2

Ashford headed back out in the second half with the same intensity however when a free kick was awarded on the edge of the box, the home side stuck back leaving a nervy twenty minutes left of the game.

Ashford weathered the storm and the sheer experience and attitude of Charmaine Benham, James and Amber Luzar told with numerous amounts of blocks and interceptions.

With ten minutes remaining to play, the pace of Cheatley and Neufville was too much to handle when the pair combined to play around the Abbey defense for Neufville to score her second.

A much deserved win for Ashford.
