Ashford Ladies Put Eight Past Orient

Ashford Town (Middlesex) Ladies progressed to the Quarter Finals of the Sue Sharples Memorial Trophy after a dominant 8-2 victory over Leyton Orient Development at Hackney Marshes.

In extremely difficult weather conditions (which included a puddle in the center of the pitch) Ashford Ladies put in a dogged performance to overcome an Orient side who put 13 past their opposition last weekend.

Irisha Smith who was returning to the side, got Ashford off to a dream start in the third minute when she beat the full back to then strike a fierce shot into the near post.

The home side replied back almost immediately when they headed in from a corner.

A contender for goal of the season soon followed when Vicky James received the ball 25 yards from goal, touched the ball out of her feet and fired into the top right corner for the diving keeper to stand no chance. A fantastic goal which saw the away side really kick on.

Lavana Neufville played through Ashley Cheatley only to be brought down the goalkeeper as she poked the ball over her head.

The referee awarded a penalty in which captain James tucked away confidently.

The pace and trickery of Cheatley as well as Neufville was too much for the home side to handle and the two combined again on the edge of the box before Neufville turned the defender to fire into the bottom corner.

Another contender for goal of the season then followed next when James whipped in a corner for Cheatley arriving to the back post to volley into the bottom corner.

Just before half time Cheatley doubled her tally for the away side to head in 6-1 up.

The second half resumed with the weather conditions arguably more challenging for both sides which saw the tempo of game drop, as a result.

The home side added another goal to their tally after poor defending from Ashford however Smith and Neufville ensured the game was well and truly out of site, ending 8-2.

Ashford Ladies now progress to the Quarter Finals of the Sue Sharples Memorial Trophy where they are to face the winners of Hampstead Reserves or Putney Vale.

Ashford Ladies return to the Robert Parker Stadium this weekend for their Quarter Final Cup match against Greenhouse Sports in the Middlesex Capital Women’s Cup.

We look forward to seeing you all there to cheer us on!
